Medicine's Ambivalence
...One reason why decision-making at the end of life
has proved to be so difficult is that modern medicine is fundamentally
ambivalent about the place of death in human life. The research part of
medicine has declared war on all causes of death, while the clinical
part is trying to persuade clinicians and patients that death is, after all,
part of life.
