American Medical
Association EPEC Project
 |
The EPEC Project was developed by the
American Medical Association (AMA) and funded by a grant
from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is designed
to educate all US physicians on the essential clinical
competencies required to provide quality end-of-life
care.
The EPEC Project comprises several complementary
components. At the heart of the project is a core
curriculum that provides physicians with the basic
knowledge and skills needed to appropriately care for
dying patients. The EPEC Curriculum consists
of four 30-minute plenary modules and twelve 45-minute
workshop modules, and is uniquely practical,
transportable, and self-contained. It combines didactic
sessions, videotape presentations, interactive
discussions, and practical exercises. It
teaches fundamental skills in communication, ethical
decision-making, palliative care, psychosocial
considerations, and pain and symptom management.

EPEC Update - Patient Safety
 |
In early February 2005, national patient safety
leaders and advocates gathered at the Allen Center of the Kellogg
School of Management, Northwestern University, to discuss another
possible adaptation of EPEC by applying the EPEC Project's virtual
college model of "train-the-trainer" high impact dissemination to
patient safety education.
Over thirty participants attended from organizations such as the
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Partnership for
Patient Safety, the American Hospital Association, the National
Quality Forum, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations, the American Nurses Association, the Institute of
Medicine, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education.
This initial meeting successfully established a curriculum committee,
which will incorporate existing patient safety education materials
within the EPEC virtual college format. A project advisory board of
national leaders in the field will present to potential funders.
The project conceptualization and initial planning were made possible
by a grant from the Zell Foundation and with the generous support of
the Jewish Healthcare Foundation.

Stanford
Faculty Development-End of Life Care
 |
The Stanford Faculty
Development Program has trained 220 medical faculty from 112
institutions as trainers of other faculty and residents since
1986. Participation in the intensive, 4-week program at Stanford
has led to new and exciting roles for the trained faculty
member. Being an effective trainer of other colleagues and
housestaff at their institution has become a major career role
for many of these faculty. For others, it has led to further
educational training and research. In addition to delivering
seminar series at their home sites, Stanford-trained
facilitators have jointly conducted regional and national
workshops for both faculty and residents. We wish to identify
faculty who are interested in conducting faculty development as
part of their career. Only six faculty are accepted in each
course. Application Deadline: June 15, 2002
