End of Life Education Fellowship
Program

The End of Life Education Fellowship Program is a
six-week summer experience designed to medical students to end of life
care issues. The program combines an orientation to end of life care
with weekly seminars and field placements at local hospices, nursing
homes, and inpatient units. This year’s program will run from June 23
through August 1, 2008. Although students will have to secure their own
housing for the program (with assistance from their program site in
identifying potential
neighborhoods), a stipend will be provided to assist in covering most
living expenses.
In order to apply for the program, an applicant must be enrolled in a
U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school. No exceptions will be

Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity in Pediatric Pain

A postdoctoral fellowship opportunity is available on
Dr. Christine Chambers? Pediatric Psychology Research Team, which is
part of the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research at the IWK Health
Centre and Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This
two-year postdoctoral fellowship position would begin in the Summer
or Fall of 2007.
The postdoctoral fellow will receive experience and training in
conducting research in pediatric pain, including grant and
manuscript writing, data analysis, and mentoring and supervising
students. The major research areas of focus are family factors in
pediatric pain, pain assessment in young children, and the role of
sleep disturbances in pediatric chronic pain. The fellow would have
the opportunity to develop and complete their own independent
projects and to collaborate with other faculty members in the Centre
for Pediatric Pain Research (e.g., Dr. Patrick McGrath, Dr. Allen
Finley). Supervised clinical activities related to pain and/or
related areas in pediatric psychology may also available. This

Preference will be given to applicants with doctoral
training in clinical psychology from a CPA or APA accredited
program, although applicants with PhDs from other disciplines will
be considered. Degree requirements must be complete prior to the
start date of the fellowship. Funding for the position is available
from the IWK Health Centre and the Nova Scotia Health Research
Foundation.

A postgraduate Social Work Fellowship in
palliative and end of life care is available through the Department
of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care (DPMPC) at Beth Israel Medical
Center. The fellowship program provides a supervised experience in
the multidimensional assessment and care of patients, in multiple
practice sites (an inpatient pain, palliative care and hospice unit,
inpatient consultation service and an ambulatory practice) at
various points along the continuum of life threatening illness. The

A Palette
of Care - Akron Children's Hospital
 |
The Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center
at Akron Children's Hospital is a full-service, transdisciplinary
program for patients of all ages with any life-threatening childhood
diagnosis. Known as "A Palette of Care," the team provides pain and
symptom management, seamless care coordination and case management,
and psychological, spiritual and emotional support. Care is provided
wherever the child is most comfortable
(home, hospital, in-patient hospice, long term care facility) by
physicians, advance practice nurses, case manager, bereavement
coordinator, social worker, chaplains, child life specialist,
expressive therapists, psychologist, pharmacist, dietitian, physical
therapist and trained volunteers. The program works with the child's
primary care teams as well as community agencies involved in the
child's care (including hospice).
The program includes an academic pediatric palliative care
fellowship, bereavement and support groups, financial assistance for
families through the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation and other
family grants, and educational initiatives for hospital and
community providers. We are based at Akron Children's, one of the
largest freestanding pediatric hospitals in the country, and provide
service, including home visits, to a large
geographic area in northeast Ohio.

Canuck Place Children's Hospice M.D. Fellowship in Pediatric
Palliative Care

We are seeking applicants interested in undertaking a
two-year M.D. Fellowship in Pediatric Palliative Care. The Fellow
will train in clinical pediatric palliative care, pediatric pain
management, and general (adult) palliative care. The Fellow will
also complete a Master's degree in an appropriate field related to
research or education. Funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health
Research, the goal is to develop capacity in the field of PPC; it is
expected that the Fellow will prepare for a career in PPC with
specific interest in one or more of the following areas: research,
education, program development. Training will take place at Canuck
Place Children's Hospice, British Columbia's Children's Hospital,
British Columbia's Women's Hospital, and the University of British
Columbia. There will be opportunity to undertake training at other
programs in Canada and the United States. Canuck Place Children’s
Hospice is North America's first free-standing children’s hospice,
and provides services to over 300 children and families. British
Columbia's Children's and Women's Hospitals are the provincial
tertiary care services for pediatrics and neonatology. Fellows must
be eligible for an educational medical license in British Columbia.

Medical College of Wisconsin Fellowship in Adult
and Pediatric Palliative Care

This two-year fellowship will focus on training
individuals to become skilled clinicians in palliative care along
with additional training in education, quality improvement, and
advocacy work. Depending on the trainee's background, tracks are
available for either a primary pediatric or adult focus; however,
all trainees will have exposure to both adult and pediatric
palliative care. This fellowship is designed to train individuals
wishing an academic career in Palliative Care. Applicants must have
completed a residency in a primary care specialty such as Internal

The Department of Palliative
Medicine at Marshfield Clinic offers a fellowship in Palliative
Medicine. Our active training program is based at a 504-bed tertiary
hospital with an 11-bed acute Palliative Care Unit, busy consultation
service (500+ new referrals annually), outpatient clinic and home
visits. We have an excellent home hospice program with 10-bed
residential hospice house. Our department offers outreach consultation
away from the main campus, including telemedicine.
A comprehensive, structured didactic program is an integral part of our
fellowship training, along with weekly journal club, case report and
rigorous research support. Our program features three faculty
specialty-trained in palliative medicine.
The fellowship is open to applicants BC/BE in internal medicine, family
practice, neurology, or physical medicine and rehabilitation. One-year
positions are available annually.

American Academy on Physician and Patient (AAPP) -- Research and
Teaching Forum on Doctor/Patient Communication

The Forum Conference will provide researchers,
educators, clinicians and other interested participants with an
update on state-of-the-art research and teaching methods in
patient-doctor-communication. It will also include the annual AAPP
membership meeting and ample opportunities to network with national
and international colleagues.
We seek presenters with new and creative ideas, projects under way,
research findings, and/ or novel teaching approaches for any aspect
of patient-doctor communication. Presentations that seek to add to
or utilize evidence-based practice are especially encouraged. A
prize will be awarded for the best poster presentation by a resident

Six inter-professional palliative care fellowship
programs are available to provide the best possible care for the
nation's veterans by transforming the care of the seriously
ill. Non-physician candidates must be U.S. citizens. Physicians must
be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Those eligible include: Board Certified or Board eligible
Physicians, who have completed primary training in internal
medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, or subspecialty
training in oncology, geriatrics or anesthesia; and Master's
Prepared Nurses and Master's Prepared Social Workers. These are

The Palliative Care
Service at the Massachusetts General Hospital offers BE/BC
physicians a one-year clinical fellowship in palliative care with
options for additional research years. Our Service is part of the
hospital's General Medicine Unit and Medical Services, and is the
home of the new Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care.
The trainee will become familiar with comprehensive,
interdisciplinary evaluation and management of diverse terminal
illnesses, and will be responsible for care of inpatients and
outpatients in varied settings, including
an academic teaching hospital, hospice/home care, and chronic care.
The fellow will also be prepared as a clinician-educator through
supervised experiences in the teaching of palliative care. An
individualized learning plan provides opportunities for additional
training and joint fellowships in such fields as oncology, pain
management, HIV, psychosocial oncology, pastoral care, pedagogy,
ethics, general medicine, public health, and care of the homeless
and underserved minorities. The fellow may also join in ongoing
research projects,
and arrangements may be made for 1-2 years of more intensive
research experience.

Palliative Care Fellowship at the University of South Florida
College of Medicine
 | The mission of the Palliative Care Fellowship at
the University of South Florida College of Medicine is to provide a
comprehensive clinical experience in palliative care focusing on pain,
psychosocial oncology, and supportive care for patients with advanced
cancer. The one-year
fellowship program, starting in July 2003, will provide
interdisciplinary clinical, educational, and research opportunities in
adult Palliative Care. Fellows will spend time at the H. Lee Moffitt
Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and
LifePath Hospice, a large hospice serving Hillsborough County with an
average daily census of 1,000 patients.
Fellows will participate in the provision of care on the inpatient
Palliative Care consultation service as well as in the outpatient Pain
and Palliative Care Clinic and Psychosocial Clinic. Fellows will
participate in multidisciplinary Palliative Care team meetings,
consisting of physicians, psychologists, advanced registered nurses
practitioners, clinical pharmacists, and social workers. In addition,
fellows will work with physicians and home treatment teams at LifePath
Hospice to provide continuity of care for patients in home hospice as
well as to become familiar with the clinical and administrative duties
of the Hospice Medical Director. A unified curriculum addressing all
core competencies of Palliative Care will span the program.
Candidates for the positions must be Board Certified/Eligible in
Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Neurology, or Family Medicine.
Candidates with specialty training in other disciplines will be
considered on a case-by-case basis.
