On Death and Dying
- What the Dying Have to Teach Doctors, Nurses, Clergy, and Their
Own Families
 |
This
is the world-famous best-seller by the woman who popularized the
field of thanatology as a subject for general social commentary.
This was her first book on the topic and is considered a
classic. It is required reading in many academic settings,
including medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries,
and popular psychology courses.
The book introduced the author's seminal "stages of dying" or
"stages of grief" model which is still widely quoted. According
to this model, there are five stages that a dying person goes
through when they are told that they have a terminal illness.
The stages go in progression through denial, anger, bargaining,
depression, and acceptance. This model has been widely adopted
by other authors and applied to many other situations where
someone suffers a loss or change in social identity. The model
is often used in bereavement work. Not all workers in the field
agree with this model, however, and some critics feel the stages
are too rigid. Regardless of whether you feel the stages are
absolute, the book is a "must read" for anyone seriously
interested in death and dying issues. Written in plain language
that anyone can understand, this important book can help
families understand what's going on as death of a loved one
draws near.

Life Lessons - Two
Experts on Death and Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life and
Living
 |
In Life Lessons, her first
book on life and living, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross joins with David
Kessler to guide readers through the practical and spiritual lessons
we need to learn so that we can live life to its fullest in every
moment. Many years of working with the dying have shown the authors
that certain lessons come up over and over again. Some of these
lessons can be difficult to master, but even the attempts to
understand them are deeply rewarding. Here, in fourteen accessible
chapters, from the Lesson of Love to the Lesson of Happiness, the
authors reveal the truth about our fears, our hopes, our
relationships, and, above all, the grandness of who we really are.

The Wheel of
Life: A Memoir of Living and Dying
 |
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross,
M.D., is the woman who has transformed the way the world thinks about
death and dying. Beginning with the groundbreaking publication of the
classic psychological study On Death and Dying, through her many books
and her years working with terminally ill children, AIDS patients and
the elderly, Kubler-Ross has brought comfort and understanding to
millions coping with their own deaths or the deaths of loved ones.
Now, facing her own death at age seventy-one, this world-renowned
healer tells the story of her life and explores her ultimate truth -
death does not exist. Written frankly and with warmth, Kubler-Ross's
memoir traces the intellectual and spiritual development of a destiny.
"If I am opinionated and independent," she writes, "if I am stuck in
my ways, if I am a little off center, so what? That is me." Her
trademark conviction, one that has taken on dogma, prejudice and
skepticism, was present as a girl in Switzerland, where the young
Elisabeth observed the injustices of the world and vowed to change
them. From her work in war-ravaged Poland to her pioneering counseling
of the terminally ill, to her legendary seminars on death and dying at
the University of Chicago, to her eye-opening discussions with those
who had been revived after death, each experience provided Kubler-Ross
with a piece of the puzzle. In a culture determined to sweep death
under a carpet and hide it there, Kubler-Ross consistently defied
common wisdom to bring it into the light and hold it there for us to
see and not be afraid. Driven by compassion, undeterred by obstacles,
she shows the reader through the story of her remarkable life that
free will is our greatest gift and that our goal is spiritual
evolution.

Working It Through
 |
This remarkable guide to
coping with death and dying grew out of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's
realization that she could help larger numbers of terminally ill
people directly by meeting with them in groups. The first such meeting
in 1970 led to hundreds more throughout the United States and the
world and now to Working It Through, a testament to 'faith and the
ability to survive and transcend the most difficult trials in life, '
as Kubler-Ross writes in her foreword. The photographer Mal Warshaw
has documented the workshops, and his moving photographs bring this
already powerful book to life.

On Children And Death
 |
In this "book on death and
dying Kubler-Ross offers help to dying children, their parents, and
others who work with them. . . . Through case studies and
correspondence with relatives of dying children, she {attempts to}
demonstrate how these children and those who love them can best
survive this traumatic experience. Kubler-Ross argues that children
intuitively know when they are dying and want and need to talk about
it. She offers practical help to make that communication easier,
encouraging expression of the natural fears and intuitions about
death."
