Burnout

There is no job description for caregivers, but the 25 million Americans who provide care for elderly or critically ill family members do anything from shopping for groceries and medicines to bathing, dressing, feeding, cleaning house, and taking care of the family finances.

Often they do it at great personal cost. For most, there just isn’t enough money or insurance to put a loved one in a long-term care facility, or the patient and family prefer to have the patient at home. Not only can this cause families to spend all their savings, but it puts a tremendous burden on the caregiver. Family caregivers are usually under-appreciated and vulnerable to physical and emotional problems, especially if they receive no respite.

Caregivers find that seeking out others who are doing the same work is a key way of supporting themselves through this difficult passage.

National Family Caregivers Association

NFCA is a grass roots organization created to educate, support, empower and speak up for the millions of Americans who care for chronically ill, aged or disabled loved ones. NFCA is the only constituency organization that reaches across the boundaries of different diagnoses, different relationships and different life stages to address the common needs and concerns of all family caregivers. More than one quarter (26.6%) of the adult population has provided care to a family member or friend during the past year. Based on current census data, that translates into more than 50 million people. Family caregivers focus on their loved one's needs. NFCA focuses on family caregivers.

"As I learned through hard experience, the practice of medicine is a black hole that can absorb every moment you will give. It's easy to become so devoted to your patients that you neglect the people who matter most to you." - Matthew D. Foster, MD 10/23/95

Being a caring doctor may be bad for you

"The whole push to create more caring doctors has to be balanced with a need to allow doctors to manage their burnout and emotional distress," said Dr Willcock. "People need to realise that you can’t work in health and not be faced with emotionally difficult situations; it’s an occupational risk."
