Pallimed Collection --
methylphenidate for fatigue, dialysis, staff burn-out, This American
Life
 |
Last week's This American Life (a public radio program)
was called 'How to Rest in Peace' and included 3 pieces: two about
coming to terms with a parent's death (murder) and which involved an
interview with a man whose mother openly planned her own suicide for 20
years before actually doing it (she was so afraid of a horrible death
'with tubes' etc. that she had meticulously planned a suicide to be
carried out before she got really ill). The first two, although about
murders, were also about grieving, 'closure' (or not), and meaning
making (or not) after a traumatic death - and a lot of it will resonate
with anyone who witnesses grief in their work. The last segment is one
of the few personal narrations I've encountered about what is
essentially an 'assisted suicide' (no physicians were involved) and is
interesting listening. It brings up issues of meaning in decline (or
not), what a good death is, 'controlling death,' and the effects of such
a death on a family (in this case it wasn't necessarily bad). |

Fetal
Concerns Program: A Model for Perinatal Palliative Care
 |
Advances in fetal diagnostics
have resulted in families facing a pregnancy complicated by a fetal
health concern. Perinatal literature supports that these families
benefit from extensive counseling and education presented by a
multidisciplinary team. In the program described in this article,
perinatal palliative care planning is offered to families who have been
told that their fetus has a potentially lethal prognosis. Called the
"Fetal Concerns Program," it was developed to address the complex needs
of families whose fetus has anomalies. This article reviews perinatal
palliative care concepts and describes the Fetal Concerns Program's
development as a perinatal palliative care service within a broader
program. The special role of the nurse coordinator of the Fetal Concerns
Program is highlighted. |

Malloy, P., et al. - Pediatric
nurses must often care for children with life-threatening illness.
Although the child may be a neonate with multiple organ failure, a young
adolescent diagnosed with HIV, or a 7-year-old child involved in a
serious bicycle accident, pediatric nurses are an essential part of the
interdisciplinary team that plans, organizes, implements, and manages
the care of these children and their families. |

Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross chosen for induction into National Women's
Hall of Fame
 |
The National Women’s Hall of Fame (NWHOF), in announcing
its 2007 inductees, has included Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a crusader
for the rights of the terminally ill, including hospice care, living
wills, and speaking openly about life and death.
“We are thrilled that this tremendous honor will bring attention to my
mother’s life work for many more people throughout the country,” says
Dr. Kübler-Ross’ son Kenneth Ross. Ross founded the
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation
to build upon her legacy by compassionately confronting death and
inspiring life.
Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is best known as the person who revolutionized
grief and bereavement attitudes toward dying patients and their families
in the United States. She wrote more than 20 books about death, which
were translated into more than 27 languages, and reveled in breaking
through barriers to bring the concept of “dying with dignity” into
mainstream medicine.
The NWHOF is a national
nonprofit organization that annually recognizes the contributions to
civilization of American women in a variety of disciplines. Since the
founding of NWHOF in 1969, 217 women have been inducted. |
