Jason Program Newsletter, July,
2002
We exist simply
because children have touched our hearts.
We believe they should be listened to and cared for.

To the Jason Program Community --
We are
glad to tell you that we now offer our help to professionals and
laypersons wishing advice on a specific issue in pediatric palliative
care. By going to our
Services
page and viewing the "Advice by E-mail" section, you can direct your
question to our expert in psychosocial, spiritual, medical, or nursing
concerns. We will reply shortly with our suggestions. Please note that
we cannot provide specific recommendations, and encourage you to
discuss our thoughts with your treatment team or personal care
provider.
Plans are now moving along nicely for our annual conference, now
rescheduled for October 3-5 of this year. Details are available
here on our site. Dr. Bruce
Himelstein with discuss "Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care",
and Dr. Suzanne Toce will review "Neonatal Pain Control" and
"Ethical and Legal Issues in High Risk Newborns".You may also
wish consider one of the other conferences we are listing, especially
the fine offering from Eastern Maine
Medical Center scheduled for September 19th and 20. The agenda is
available here,
and you can find more details on our
calendar page.
Similarly, our Advanced Training Course, scheduled for August 21-25
this year is receiving a great deal of interest. We have even
received requests from Oregon and China. You can find details on our
Advanced Training page.
There are some new offerings on the web that you may find of interest.
First, we are pleased to introduce you to Ms. Jill Babcock, RN, who
joins us as our Volunteer and Events Coordinator. Jill also
provides excellent nursing care to several of the Jason Program
children. You can read about her
here. In the
News
section you will find that Kate has taken up the challenge to run in
the Maine Marathon this year to benefit the children of our program.
"I am running the marathon for these kids," she says. "Yesterday I was
with a baby who was just struggling for every breath. He does this
every day. I just have to do it for 26 miles." Kate's story is
available
here. Send her a note of
encouragement
here! In addition, we remind
you to consider the services of AirLifeLine. This is a group of
dedicated pilots who will provide air transportation to individuals
who need specialized medical services far from home. You can lean
about them on their
website.
More
information on the care of critically ill children is available on our
site. We encourage you to review the new offerings on the
Advances section of the news page. The
Pain Relief
section is also growing, and offers
Tools that
professionals might find useful in their day-to-day activities. If you
have anything you feel we should be offering to others, please
drop me a line and
we'll consider including it on our site.
As always, on behalf of the children,
we thank you for your interest and caring.
Sincerely,
The Jason Program Team
